Chesterfield - 26th to 29th August 2011

8 units and 12 members, two cats and 4 dogs enjoyed a lovely bank holiday meet beside the canal at Tapton Lock in Chesterfield. There were a variety of units including lots of different Romahomes, a Romini and Chocoholics self build van. The site was right on the canal side and although there was torrential rain on the day of arrival this was good because we needed to get the canal level up so that we could have our boat trip.

Everyone was met and welcomed to the site by our meet organiser Twolitre (Jim) and Mary presented all attendees with a lovely cake lollipop with the Small Motorhome and Friends logo printed on top.

Saturday was the day of the much awaited canal boat trip and the weather was fine as we made our way to the visitor centre to board the boat. Captain Jim was on hand to navigate the boat and tell us all about the points of interest on the way as we glided along at a leisurely walking pace. After passing through various locks which were expertly handled by Richard and Jim's son Peter we arrived at Nona's Cafe for a lovely buffet. After we had all satisfied our appetites we boarded the boat again for the return journey armed with leftover buffet goodies in case we got peckish on the way back.

The two and half hour journey back was cut short however when despite the best efforts of Jim the boat struggled to get through the weed and due to the increased engine revs we ran out of diesel. Lucky that we had brought our extra buffet rations because we were wondering if we would have to spend the night on board. However we were faced with a choice of waiting on the boat while Jim fetched some diesel or walking back for about a mile, most opted for the walk and several folks decided to stop for liquid refreshment at the canal side pub which was handily situated along the way.

Sunday was a day of leisure as some walked to Chesterfield along the tow path to the car boot and other attractions while others were content to relax on site. In the evening everyone gathered at Graham and Pauline's van for a wine, beer and nibbles evening, although it was an unseasonably cool evening we all had a nice chat and enjoyed the refreshments.

Monday it was time to pack our awnings and vans up and say goodbye and make our way home from a lovely meet.

Members attending (in no particular order): Twolitre (Jim our host), Graham and Pauline, Dolly (Angela) and Patriscott (Pat), Lizp (Liz), Sidick (Jill and Richard), Chocoholic (Pete), Marie2Chris (Marie), Vanderella (Mary and John).
