Getting insurance for your Motorhome.

It is worth getting good insurance cover for your pride and joy, it would be heartbreaking enough for it to be stolen or damaged but imagine not being able to recoup any losses? It doesn't bear thinking about.

Here are our tips on getting insurance:

  • If cost is important you could try increasing the excess you pay in the event of a claim, this might decrease your premiums and hopefully you will never have to pay out the excess anyway. However you do need to know that you could get your hands on a few hundred pounds if you did.

  • Ask if they offer any discount if you are a member of any camping or caravanning club, some do and it might help reduce the premium

  • Ask if they offer any discount if you have security devices. We have a wheel clamp and also use steering locks. Some people have alarms and other devices.

  • Check what cover you have in the event of your Motorhome being written off - We were once on a site where a Motorhome was severely damaged while on site and the only vehicle they were offered to get home in, with all their belongings,  was a small van!

  • Opt for Fully Comprehensive Insurance if you can afford it - it gives far more cover than Third Party, Fire and Theft which will only cover the other vehicle in the event of an accident or the fire or theft of your own. No payout if your van is in an accident.

  • Make full use of your no claims bonus and ensure that it is carried over to your new insurance company.

  • Make sure the company understand that your vehicle is a Motorhome, especially if it is a van conversion. If not and you just get cover for the basic vehicle you might not be covered for the loss or damage to fittings such as sinks, toilets etc. and additional equipment such as awnings, gas bottles etc.

  • Do you do low mileage in your motorhome? Ask if there is a discount for this

  • Ask if there is a deal for having breakdown cover included with your insurance

  • Get several quotes and compare the benefits perhaps using one of the on line comparison sites, Money Saving Expert gives really good advice.
