This great earthwork, with its huge banks and ditches, lies near Salisbury on the edge of the Wiltshire chalk plains. Originally created by Iron Age people in about 500BC, it was later occupied by Romans, Saxons and in 1070, William the Conqueror paid off his army here. Today the remains of the prehistoric fortress, the Norman palace, castle and cathedral, evoke powerful memories of the people associated with this place. In addition the surrounding chalk downs, with many wild flowers, make this a magical spot. Below is a photograph of the Salisbury campsite taken from The Old Sarum, you can see Salisbury Cathedral in the distance. | ||
